A few minutes of advance preparation can make all the difference in getting the shot you want, especially when it comes to more extreme shooting conditions such as low light, nighttime or super bright sun. In this week’s pep talk, I’m encouraging you to do this one thing before your next family outing or trip.

It’s your turn to talk! Do you think about shooting conditions before leaving your home? Also, I’d love to know if you have any tips for other readers on getting your camera ready for a trip.

Great advice. Also, many times I have the knowledge, but it all seems to disappear when I start snapping. I need to slow down and think. I know I need to study up on low light photography. I can get good outside photos, but my indoor photos are usually pretty bad, either blurry or grainy. I think my camera is lousy in low light, but I believe part is due to the operator. 😉 This also made me think that I would like to start planning poses and props for photo shoots with my whole family when we get together. I see some really cute ideas out there, and the kids get a kick out of that…well, most of them anyway. My son would probably rather eat brussel sprouts and liver before having his picture taken at all.

I just laughed at the picture of your son eating brussel sprouts and liver – those pictures would be priceless, too!

Francine, you just gave me an idea for possible future pics! My son gets some really good facial expressions with new food–whether it’s something he totally loves or something he totally hates. I would have to be sneaky, though. He has some kind of built in camera radar and knows when a picture of him is about to be snapped.

If you’re using a laptop and it has an onboard camera, you might be able to leave it facing the table and be up getting something you forgot and just happen to click the picture taking key. But while I have a laptop that has a camera, I’ve never used it so I don’t know if it would work. A phone with a camera might also be a sneaky way to get your picture (I don’t have one of those so I’m not too sure about that.) The other hint, if you use a digital camera, is to turn off the sound it makes when you click a picture; check your settings. Good luck. I hope I get to see some of those “Ugh, I can’t believe you made me eat that Mom!” pictures.

I try to remind myself to take a cleaning kit whenever I’m using my camera for more than a few hours or I’m headed somewhere messy/dusty/wet etc – just a simple one with some lens tissues, some spray cleaner and a soft cloth and a small brush (particularly if I’m off to the beach).
